Displays for smart devices

Screens are increasingly being integrated into a wide range of smart devices found throughout the home, from living room gadgets (such as audio and video players) to office equipment (including computer accessories like printers and scanners), bedroom devices (e.g., weather stations), kitchen appliances (such as coffee makers, microwaves, stoves, ovens, and refrigerators), and bathroom equipment (e.g., washing machines and boilers).

However, not all smart devices are equipped with screens. For instance, sensors often lack displays, although this is not always the case. Similarly, devices like radiator heads may feature small screens, typically with diagonals not exceeding 1.5 inches. The most common displays used in these cases are reflective LCM screens, which do not require a backlight. Instead, ambient light is used to illuminate the content, with a mirror often employed to reflect the light. Custom solutions can also be created according to specific customer requirements.

Another noteworthy application in select devices, such as coffee machines, audio and video equipment, and printers or scanners, is the bar-type LCD-TFT display. These displays, typically several inches in size, stand out due to their widescreen shape, providing a unique design compared to standard models. For these devices, solutions with universal parameters are often sufficient, such as achieving optimal readability at a brightness of 250 cd/m². Full viewing angles may not always be necessary, with a 12:00 or 6:00 viewing direction often being sufficient depending on the device’s design and user interaction.

As an alternative, EPD (electrophoretic display) solutions can be a great fit for devices in well-lit environments, offering excellent readability using either natural or artificial light. EPD displays are also highly energy-efficient, as they consume power only when the content changes, making them ideal for battery-powered devices like weather stations. However, due to higher production costs, EPDs are less common in consumer electronics, with most applications still limited to e-book readers.

Smart Office

In office spaces, reservation systems for common areas like conference rooms are often managed through nearby control panels. For this application, 10-inch LCD-TFT touch modules are ideal. These displays, designed for indoor use, provide optimal readability with a brightness of around 750 cd/m², and full viewing angles ensure content is visible from any direction.

Touch sensor choice can vary, with capacitive or resistive options available. To protect the screens in semi-public spaces, it’s recommended to use thick glass, potentially customized with logos or color accents. Anti-fingerprint (AF) coatings are also beneficial, reducing dirt and smudges, including fingerprints.

Smart Home

Screens have become an integral part of nearly every domestic space, with various data visualization technologies in use, including LCD-TFT, LCM, OLED, and occasionally EPD. The controlled environment of homes or apartments makes it possible to rely on standard solutions with universal parameters, even when using LCD-TFT displays. This predictability allows for optimal performance in such settings.
