Displays used in vehicles
Displays in vehicles must endure a variety of extreme conditions. While not inherently linked to harsh environments, vehicle electronics are subjected to factors such as extreme temperatures, rapid temperature changes (e.g., when opening a door in freezing or hot weather), vibration, and interference.
For automotive applications, OLED displays are often used due to their exceptional readability in both daylight and nighttime, along with wide viewing angles. Their ability to operate within a temperature range of -40°C to 80°C ensures reliability in extreme conditions.
However, LCD-TFT displays are more commonly used in automotive applications. These displays are chosen for their higher brightness (approximately 750 cd/m²) to ensure clear visibility under direct sunlight. They also offer full viewing angles for optimal readability by both the driver and passengers. To withstand varying temperature extremes, automotive displays typically feature a wide operating temperature range, at least -20°C to 70°C. Since many vehicle displays require touch functionality, appropriate touch sensors and protective glass must be selected to maintain both performance and durability.

Solutions for electric car chargers
As electric cars continue to gain popularity, the demand for infrastructure to support these vehicles is growing, with chargers being a key element of this development. These chargers come in various sizes and designs, allowing them to be installed in a range of locations, such as shopping mall parking lots.
Electric car charging stations are increasingly appearing in public spaces, often consisting of multiple dispensers resembling traditional gas station pumps. The most common interface for these chargers is LCD-TFT displays, which, when designed with clear interfaces, offer an intuitive user experience. Since these devices are often placed outdoors, the displays need to be optimized for varying light conditions. To ensure optimal readability, displays should have a brightness of at least 1000 cd/m², with some locations requiring brightness levels up to 1500 or 2500 cd/m². High-TNI technology should also be incorporated to protect the liquid crystals from damage caused by sunlight.
Given the wide range of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures, it is important to select displays with a broad operating temperature range (at least -20°C to 70°C). In particularly harsh conditions, additional components such as heaters or fans may be necessary to maintain the proper operating temperature for the electronics, not just the screen.
An alternative to the larger “distributor” charging stations are compact charging devices, designed for installation in covered parking areas, including public spaces like shopping malls. These devices are ideally suited for small-sized monochrome OLED displays, which provide excellent readability due to their high contrast and wide viewing angles. Their wide operating temperature range (-40 to 80°C) also ensures reliable performance in both extremely low and high temperatures.
In both types of charging stations, the ability to operate the device via touch adds a significant convenience. This requires pairing the display matrix with a touch sensor and protective glass. Given the public nature of these installations, additional security measures should be considered to prevent damage or vandalism. Increased durability can be achieved by using a capacitive touch sensor and several millimeters of protective glass.
Additionally, an anti-shatter (AS) coating can be applied to the screen surface to prevent glass shards from spreading in the event of an impact. Protection against dust or water ingress is also crucial, and this can be achieved by using enclosures with the appropriate level of waterproofing.
